Bill Speed, 73, of Dillard, Ga. died Tuesday January 12, 2016 at the comfort of his own home .
Born in the Warwoman Community, Clayton, Ga. September 26, 1942, he was the son of the late Lewis Shirley Speed and Annie Mae Moore Speed. He was preceded in death by one brother, John Lewis (Bud) Speed and two sisters, Joan Elizabeth and Mildred Sheryl Speed.
Bill was retired from the Georgia Department of Transportation. Prior to working at D.O.T., Bill worked for 30 years with Burlington Industries. He was a lifelong resident of Rabun County and an avid bear hunter. He was a member of the Georgia Bear Hunter Association , a member of Rabun County and Macon County Coon Hunters Association and was President of Warwoman Friends and Families Coon Hunter Club. He and his wife, Martha , spent many Sundays at Newman’s Chapel Baptist Church where they were devoted members.
Bill is survived by his wife, Martha Jean Conner Speed of Dillard, two children , Norma Jean Speed Davidson (Barry) of Turnerville , Georgia, Carlton Speed (Kristie Bellamy Speed ) of Banks County , Georgia. Six grandchildren , Chad Neil and Cassidy Geneva Davidson , Conner Owen Speed , Taylor, Shelby Elaine and Lauren Elotta Speed . Four brothers, Jim Hardy Speed of Lithia Springs , Ga. , Eddie Speed of Franklin , N.C. , Dale Speed of South Carolina and Wesley Speed of Clarkesville, Ga. Five sisters, Mary Sue Page of Clayton, Annie Jean Gittens of Dallas, Ga. , Judy Cecila Harris of Rockmart, Ga. , Melinda Beatrice Pate of Lithonia , Ga. and Callie Allene Hatcher of Comer, Ga. Bill also leaves behind several beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Friday January 15, 2016 at the Newman’s Chapel Baptist Church Otto , N.C. with Rev. Raymond Page and Rev. Danny Cannon officiating . Rev. Harvey Conner officiating at Graveside at the Newman’s Chapel Cemetery.
The body is at Hunter funeral home and will be taken to Newman’s Chapel Baptist Church Thursday Jan 14,2016 for visitation from 6 to 8 P.M. The family is at home in Dillard.
