Charles “Chuck” aka “The Sign Man” Crawford, age 85, of Rabun Gap, Georgia, passed away on Sunday, May 24, 2026.
Chuck was devoted to his family and shared 65 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life. He was a caring and loyal husband, father, and friend who would do anything for those he loved.
A lifelong motorcycle enthusiast, Chuck never lost his sense of adventure. At 79 years old, he rode his motorcycle from Clayton, Georgia, to California and back. He also founded the Damaged Goods Motorcycle Club in Clayton, a reflection of both his love for riding and the friendships he built along the way.
Chuck was a gifted sign painter whose talent began at an early age, creating his very first sign at just 9 years old. Sign painting became not only his career, but his greatest passion in life. He owned and operated a successful sign business in Florida before relocating to Clayton, Georgia, in 1988. There, he established The Sign Shop in Mountain City, where he faithfully served the community for more than 37 years. His craftsmanship could be seen on signs painted throughout the Southeast, from Michigan to Florida, leaving behind a lasting mark through his work and artistry.
Above all else, Chuck loved his wife, children, and grandchildren dearly.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Mary Jean Amsdill Crawford; children, Angela Louise Wingate (Angel Roman) and Mark Crawford and his wife, Amber; grandchildren, Frederick Wingate (Leeana), Spencer Wingate (Mary), and April Reid (Jackson); and great-grandchildren, Llina Wingate, Atlas Wingate, and Madilyn Reid.
A memorial service celebrating Chuck’s life will be held at The Sign Shop in Mountain City, Georgia, June 13, 2026 at 10:00 AM. Family and friends are invited to gather for “Coffee with Chuck” one more time — a time to share memories, fellowship, and maybe even solve a few of the world’s problems together.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Doug Crawford.
