Rabun Gap

Debbie Jane Hunnicutt, age 68, of Rabun Gap, Georgia passed away surrounded by her family on Monday, April 8, 2024, at her residence following an extended illness.

Mrs. Hunnicutt was born on February 23, 1956, in Liberty, New York to the late Jay Elwood Cross and Reatha Irene Benton. She was preceded in death by her aunt and uncle who raised her, Arthur William and Dolly E Husch; her first husband, George James Swartwout, Sr.; and her sister, Julie Caruso.

Debbie grew up in New York, where she spent her formative years helping on her uncle’s farm. Her upbringing instilled in her a deep appreciation for the outdoors and a strong work ethic. It was during this time that she cultivated her love of creation, especially animals, and the simple joys of life. In 1973, Debbie dedicated herself to her god, Jehovah. This dedication influenced the passion she brought to the other areas of her life such as creating works of hand crocheted items and serving others, particularly children with special needs. She owned and operated "Cross Daycare" in New York, where she poured her love and care into the lives of the children she worked with. Debbie was also a talented crafter who found joy in creating beautiful pieces of jewelry and crocheted goods. Her intricate blankets and baby items were not only a testament to her skill but also a reflection of the love she poured into every stitch. Debbie's craftsmanship brought warmth and comfort to countless individuals, and she often shared her creations with others through sales and gifts.

Survivors include her husband, Jerry L. Hunnicutt, of Tiger; daughters, Jayne Cross, of Rabun Gap; Tammy Mitchell, of New York; grandchildren, Sarah Cross, of Rabun Gap; Jody McGonigle, of New York; Her sister Lisa Papadopoulos.
