Elvin Ray Rhodes, 67, of Lakemont, Georgia, died peacefully of natural causes at his mountain home on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. He was the husband of Helen Fisher and the son of the late Floyd and Gladys Kiser Rhodes.
Elvin was a fiercely independent man who lived by the Golden Rule and a strong sense of right and wrong. He was a good neighbor who helped many people in his neck of the North Georgia woods. He was also a skilled carpenter, plumber, and electrician who worked for many loyal customers in Sky Valley and beyond. Elvin enjoyed playing and restoring guitars, watching baseball, and advising his brothers on home-improvement projects. But mostly, Elvin liked to spend time with Helen and their cat, Friday.
Born in Harrisonburg, Virginia, Elvin grew up primarily in Sarasota, Florida, where he set the unofficial record for climbing radio towers without permission. He and Helen moved to Lakemont about 30 years ago, soon after Elvin designed and built their mountain retreat. He is survived by Helen and two brothers, Gene Rhodes of Tallahassee, Florida, and Karl Rhodes of Richmond, Virginia, and the cat.
The family will celebrate Elvin’s life at a private memorial service. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Another Chance Rescue, Rebab and Sanctuary in Lakemont.
