Jimmy "Jim" Alton Whitmire, age 82, of Clayton, Georgia, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, July 8, 2026.
Born on March 14, 1944, in Clayton, Georgia, Jim was the son of the late Clinton Sylvester Whitmire and Fannie Elizabeth Sexton Whitmire. He was married to his loving wife of 63 years, Janice Evans Whitmire.
Jim graduated from Rabun County High School in 1962, where he excelled in football and basketball.
Jim worked briefly at Lockheed Martin, but his career was with the City of Marietta. He started with the Fire Department for one year and then transferred to the Police Department, where he retired after 36½ years of service. During his career, he received numerous awards. He loved his job and was good at it. His career took him many places, and he met many interesting, important people, as well as unimportant people, but he always treated everyone the same.
After raising their family in Marietta, they retired to Jasper, Georgia, where they developed a small farm from the raw earth. During this time, Jim was saved at the Billy Graham Crusade in Atlanta, Georgia, in October 1994 and then joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Jasper.
In 2016, they moved back home to Mountain City, Georgia, where they remained until the Lord called him home.
In addition to his wife, Janice, he is survived by his sons, Jeff Whitmire and wife, Angela, of Covington, Georgia, and Jason Whitmire and wife, Merce, of Villa Rica, Georgia; grandchildren, Austin Whitmire, Trent Whitmire, Zach Whitmire, Lila Whitmire, McKenzie Whitmire, and Sophia Whitmire; sisters, Laurel Barnes and Linda Clippard and husband, Howard; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Bobby Whitmire, Clinton Junior Whitmire, and Billy "Bill" Whitmire; and his sister, Louise Whitmire Magnes.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Wolffork Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Barker and Tony Ramirez officiating.
