John Darnell

October 4, 1961 — September 26, 2019

John Wayne Darnell passed away on Thursday, September 26, 2019 in Otto, NC. He was the son of the
late John Raymond “Buck” Darnell and Ruth Bingham Darnell of Rabun Gap.

John Wayne was born October 4, 1961, the youngest of 13 children.
Other than his parents, he was pre-deceased by his brothers Jim Darnell, George Darnell, David Darnell
and Freddie Darnell and by his sister, Virginia Sue Darnell.
John Wayne is survived by brothers Bill Darnell (Bernice), Frank Darnell (Wanda) and Reid Darnell
(Ginnie) and sisters Becky Cannon (Sonny), Mary Ramey, Patti Gowens and Diane Stowe (Danny). Many
beloved nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Many only recognized the troubled life that John Wayne lived. But he was more than that. He was a
master carpenter and a certified plumber and electrician. He had an Associates Degree in Business. He
was a mechanic who was able to piece together a motorcycle with scraps, bungee cords, zip ties and
electric light switch. He made do with what he had. He was an artist and poet who wrote beautiful
lyrics and put them to music, many about people who had touched his life in some way. He was a true
friend who always looked for the best in people. In his words, “I am the same old John Wayne,
everyday! I Love Everybody.” We loved him and he will be greatly missed.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Kelly’s Creek Park on Kelly’s Creek Rd on Saturday, October 5 from
4:00 – 5:00 pm. Per his wishes, his body has been cremated.
For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to Freedom Ministries Lighthouse, Inc., 7247 Old 441 S Lakemont , Ga 30552.
