Melvin Harris Burrell, age 92, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 1, 2025, at Mountain Lakes Medical Center with his family by his side.
Harris was born on January 29, 1933, in Clayton, Georgia, to the late Aubrey Lee Burrell and Hallie Louise Miller Burrell. He was the devoted husband of Catherine Lynn Burrell for 25 years. Following the end of the Korean War, Harris served in the United States Army as a Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne preforming 52 jumps. After his military service, he worked for the Georgia Department of Transportation, retiring after 30 years of dedicated service. He loved his Lord and Savior, he was a longtime member of Persimmon Baptist Church, where he led the choir for many years. In his later years, he attended Bethel Baptist Church. Harris had a deep love for gardening and often shared the fruits of his labor with the community, using his garden as a ministry to help others.
In addition to his beloved wife, Catherine, Harris is survived by, one daughter, Tina Williams (Daryl), one sister, Dorothy Mae Thompson (Kermit) of Clayton, GA; three brothers, Coyl Burrell (Mavis) of Clayton, GA, Mike Burrell (Louise) of Highlands, NC, and Jerry Burrell (Lois), of Tiger, GA; nieces and nephews, Robbie, John and Adam Burrell; Scott and Steve Thompson; Denise Welch, Doug Burrell, Melanie Dills, Lori Bee, Melissa Scroggs and April Mueller; several great nieces and nephews also survive.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at Bethel Baptist Church, with Rev. Danny Cannon officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until the service hour. Interment will follow at Persimmon Community Cemetery with Johnny Billingsley officiating the graveside service.
