Sigridur Jona Alexander, age 88, of Clayton, Georgia, passed away on January 9, 2026.
She was born on March 28, 1937, in Reykjavík, Iceland, to the late Magus Maguson and Petrina Magnusdottir. In 1954, she married Frank J. Alexander in Iceland after the two met while he was stationed there serving in the United States military. Later that same year, they relocated to the United States.
Sigridur became a United States citizen in 1967 while the family was stationed in Alaska. Following the conclusion of Frank’s military career, they settled in Rabun County in 1972.
Sigridur had a deep appreciation for the arts and was exceptionally talented in many creative pursuits, including knitting, tapestry, crocheting, seamstress work, and painting.
She is survived by her children, Pearl “Patti” Alexander Saunders (Todd), Allen Lee Alexander (Gabbie), Debra Alexander McDonald (Wayne), Terry Alexander Gibson (Ben), and Jason Alexander; forty-one grandchildren; and twenty great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 15, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at the Eastside Chapel of Hunter Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow at Rabun Memory Park in Tiger, Georgia.
